I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship. My family is everything to me, and this is nothing unusual or unexpected. But what has surprised me as an adult is that my family doesn’t fill all my needs. They are my everything and yet they don’t provide everything for me, and to be frank I don’t expect them to. This is why we have friends. To fill the spaces where family is absent. We seek out those that challenge us, set us straight, love us, respect us, or maybe fill whatever spaces that aren’t inhabited by family. And we hope to do the same for them. So that we may return home to our families, fulfilled and refreshed and ready to love.
